My guess: every immigrant community goes through it, hence the Irish, the Polish etc. joke. They were different, they talked funny, acted funny, and so people manage fear/ lack of understanding with jokes. It’s too simple to say that it’s just racism and done by bad people. We in Eastern Europe, for example, have a whole lot of very painful, pointed jokes about ourselves. Bulgarians have some of the most vicious Bulgarian jokes around. Humor is a way to transmit very simplified cultural messages.

ok im polish so is my whole family but i got absolutely no clue why people make jokes about us. My family immigrated when i was 2 with barely no money just a suitcase and now doing extremely well all family friends in our new country also polish all graduated very smart and all. So we’ve all heard the jokes about the Polish supposedly being stupid, but what is the origin? Does this stem from their unwillingness to prepare at all for a potential German invasion pre WW2, or does it predate that, or is it later? I don’t get it. Most stereotypes have a clear origin in history that may or may not hold some basis in truth, but I can’t think of much that would lead to jokes suggesting that an entire nation is populated by idiots. Where the heck did this stem from?

As a kid polish jokes were funny. As an adult stll funny. Now that I am married to a Pole and living in a polish community, I have to ask why r they the brunt of “stupid” jokes? I ask my wife and she doesn’t know. What did they do that deemed them as stupid. The one I’m married to isn’t the brightest bulb in the pack and I don’t think its ’cause she’s Polish or is it?
